Large schools of big, aggressive, great fighting, and good eating fish stage over Florida’s reefs and wrecks year round making Amberjacks a great “go to” fish.
First time anglers, birthday boys, bachelor parties, pro athletes and “Leroy Brown”… will be beggin’ for mercy as they battle these brutes, or as we call them “Reef Donkey’s” which are common in the 25 to 65 pound range with a 142 lb Fl. record caught just south of here. A tug o war with over 20 pounds of drag, on 50-150 lb. class bottom rods, spooled with 80-100 lb braid, bent in half like an Ugly Stick commercial. Keeping them out of the bottom or the wreck is the main mission, so the first 20 feet is the most important. After that a steady winching to the top will get them boat side for pictures and either a release or the smokehouse.
