Fun to hunt and sight cast to, great fighters, excellent table fare and pretty obliging when presented with bait, cobia rank as one of the favorite fish to many local anglers. With a thick, dense, white meet and a diet consisting primarily of crabs and shrimp, cobia is prime table fare and perfect for grilling, chowder and even sashimi.
Sight casting jigs to cruising fish, which average 25 to 65 pounds with a state record of 130 lbs. while they free swim on the surface just off the beach, or behind and huge manta rays is one of the most exciting methods of catching these highly prized fish.
Cobias migrate up and down the Florida Coast year round with the peek months being from Jan to July. Manta Rays, big sharks and leather back sea turtles are often followed by cobia because when they go down to the bottom they kick up crabs and shrimp, the cobias primary food source, this is also a reason why cobia are so good to eat. Cobia can also be targeted while anchored up, or drifting too. Shallow water reefs and wrecks are great places to soak live bait; a crab or blind cast a jig.
Stuart Fl. Sailfish Charters:
Held in the highest regards, fastest and most sought after game fish by anglers around the globe, the Atlantic sailfish migrates up and down the Florida coast year round. During season, this majestic fish offers ample opportunities to anglers of all skill levels. Stuart Florida has been nick named “The Sailfish Capital Of The World” and without doubt it is best places in the country to target these amazing fish.
Capt. Scott has over 50 top three finishes in billfish tournaments alone and has been Top Captain in the Treasure Coast Sailfish Championship multiple times. He also holds the record as Captain for most sailfish releases over the three tournament series, and has released 28 sails in a single day on three separate occasions while fishing out of Stuart Fl. Captain Scott encourages a hands on approach and has the experience and professionalism to help you hook, fight and release that fish of a lifetime. Whether it’s your first sailfish release ever, or the last of a five banger to win a tournament, Capt. Scott exhibits professionalism and courtesy while keeping the madness in check and instructing you to a successful sailfish release.
The majority of our Fl, sailfish charters are spent trolling dead baits, or drifting live baits suspended from kites, but over the last few years we have been doing a lot more fly fishing for sailfish with good success. In all cases we use at least one dredge teaser pulled from a Cannon TS10 electric downrigger and tackle ranging from 12- 20 lb test on custom Blackfin Rods. The tactics and teasers used while targeting sailfish will attract all local species, it is common to catch dolphin, blackfin tuna, false albacore, wahoo, kingfish sharks and cobia while casing sailfish off Stuart, making “dinner and a show” a good possibility every time. The bait and switch bite, off the teaser, in my opinion is the most exciting bite fishing offers and that is what the boat is named after… Hooking a sailfish “Off the Chain” or off the dredge never gets old, and with Captain Scott’s teaser set up you’ll see why.
One of the strongest, most beautiful, and downright tastiest fish in south Florida’s waters, the yellowfin tuna is considered a prized catch anywhere in the world. With explosive strikes, blistering runs, and back breaking strength. Yellowfin tuna offer up firm pinkish, opaque meat that tastes so good I’m salivating as I write this. From sashimi to jerky, seared to grilled, not only is it one of the best eating, but also one of the most exciting fish to target South Florida.
On our Florida tuna charters yellow fin tuna average 60 to 80 pounds, with the occasional encounter with the 100 to 150 pound fish. Fl. record is 240 lbs. and although we haven’t caught one in the 200 lb class yet, we have seen them. Primarily targeting these fish on the other side of the Gulf Stream where cooler, nutrient rich, bait concentrated eddies butt up against the northern bound current. Purple water, weed lines, bait, and birds, outline the target rich areas.
Using our 12 KW Furuno Radar, we mark packs of birds feeding on bait as the tuna push it to the surface. From as far as 6 miles away we can pin point the action and run and gun from pack to pack. Often as you approach the birds you can see the splashes of huge yellowfin tuna busting baits and leaping clear out of the water long before you can make out the swarms of birds circling overhead. Witnessing scenes right out of Nation Geographic, these trips provide some of the most amazing days on the water.
Other fish we catch during our Fl. tuna charters are dolphin, wahoo, blackfin tuna, marlin, sailfish and barracuda. Trolling, live baiting, and jigging are some of the best ways to target these brutes, and trust me, these fish are no joke. Before the trip, get plenty of rest and eat your Wheaties!
Stuart Fl. Dolphin Fishing Charters:
With year round availability, a ferocious strike, spectacular jumps, and a 5 star menu rating, its no wonder why dolphin, (mahi mahi) are one of the most targeted species during Florida fishing charters.
Dolphin are know as the fastest growing fish in the ocean and definitely eating machines. The average fish we catch out of Stuart is 8 to 20 pounds but larger fish in the 40 to 60 pound range do show up on occasion, especially as by catch during our Fl. tuna charters. The Florida record is 81 pounds and was caught in 2011 just a few miles south of Stuart.
Dolphin can be found in all depths of water, but off the Treasure Coast most of our fishing for them takes place along our Eight Mile Reef in 135 feet of water , and our sea mount called “The Hill” in 350 feet of water located not even 10 miles out of the Saint Lucie Inlet. Dolphin hang around weed lines, pieces of float, and bottom structure, they migrate up and down the coast in packs or schools usually eating everything that gets in their way. Often after hooking a fish the entire school will follow them up to the boat in hopes of receiving more food. This glutinous behavior makes them the perfect quarry for anglers of all skill levels, light tackle charters and fly fishing enthusiasts.
